Politician, US Representative from Virginia. was the eldest son of Judge Alexander Stuart and the father of General J. E. B. Stuart.
He was an officer in the United States Army in the War of 1812. He represented, first, Campbell County in the Virginia Legislature,
and was later repeatedly elected to both branches of the legislature from Patrick County. He was a member of the Constitutional Convention
of 1829-30, and of the Convention of 1850. He married Elizabeth Letcher Pannill, of Pittsylvania County, Va., and they had four sons
and six daughters. Among these, James Ewell Brown (J.E.B.) Stuart was the seventh child and youngest son. Archibald and
Elizabeth Made their home on a farm they called Laurel Hill in the Ararat Community of Patrick County and it was there
that their children were born. Archibald died at Laurel Hill in 1855 and rested in the Family Cemetery until 1952 when
he was moved to the Elizabeth Cemetery in Saltville, Virginia where he rest today beside his wife who moved to the Saltville area following his death.

Encore un document manuscrit de Stuart (en vente en sept 2012), la calligraphique et belle et régulière à la différence de la note rédigée à la hâte sue le champ de bataille (voir plus haut sur cette même page).

très intéressant, Sisco, merci pour la doc, de plus j'ai toujours eu un faible pur Stuart aussi.
quelques détails originaux sur son équipement :
-les cavaliers auront reconnu le sabre français de cavalerie légère mod 1822 ( klingenthal )
-la selle Mc Clellan 1859 modèle troupe US, le modèle officier etait généralement entièrement recouvert de cuir et non de rawhide comme là
-le ceinturon est un modèle fédéral, boucle US, probablement celui qu'il portait avant la guerre

Mon propre sabre, celui avec lequel je défilais à Saint-Cyr que je portais à la place de celui que l’École m'avait fourni, n'a plus qu'un anneau de bélière mais le fourreau porte la marque de l'emplacement du second. Mon sabre est gravé à mon nom sur le coté droit de la lame et à gauche celui de ma promotion.
Cette modification de 1882 avait été entérinée parce que nombre des officiers qui commandaient une arme personnelle à Klingenthal qui fournissait des armes du modèle réglementaire mais "améliorées" fournissait à la demande des fourreaux à un seul anneau de bélière. De plus en plus d'officiers portaient même au combat des sabres à un seul anneau. Les jours d'arrêts pour uniforme non réglementaire n'arrêtaient pas les lieutenants, et on ne faisait plus "caguer" les capitaines qui donnaient le "mauvais" exemple.
En fait il faut attendre bien après le départ de Badinguet ( Napoléon III) pour que le commandement se résolve à envisager d'adopter la modification. Les attendus de la décision technique (D.T.) 1881 entrée en vigueur en 1882 sont truffés de prétextes opérationnels mais il faut bien admettre que la double bélière n’apportait pas grand chose au port du sabre à cheval et était empoisonnant lorsqu'on se déplaçait à pied. J'ai pu faire la comparaison lors de la reconstitution annuelle de la bataille d'Austerlitz qui se tient à l’automne juste avant la remise des casoars sur le "Plateau de Pratzen" du camp de Coëtquidan.
