Centaurs addict, but create friendships for life!
For some good while now, I have known „Le Molvanien“, FROCS # 224. He’s a Frenchman and collector of both Centaur and Santa Barbara black powder revolvers.  I correspond often with him over the social media. We have so much in common, it’s amazing.

Depuis un certain temps, je connais « Le Molvanien » FROCS # 224. Il est français et collectionne à la fois les revolvers à poudre noire Centaure et les Santa Barbara. Nous discutons souvent par media social interposé, et nous avons tellement de point d’intérêt communs que c’en est surprenant.


One evening, I sat on my sofa, and probably he on his, and we “talked” about the steadily increasing prices of our favorite revolver.  Incidentpressed the desire to own a Centaur Marshal, but the prices in France are too high and exaggerated.  This is probably because black powder arms can be bought there without restriction.
Un soir, alors que j’étais installé dans mon canapé, et lui probablement dans le sien, nous « discutions » de l’augmentation régulière des prix de nos revolvers favoris. Il exprima son envie d’avoir un Centaure Marshal, mais les prix de ce modèle étaient trop élevés et exagérés à son avis, probablement parce que les armes à poudre noire sontren vente libre en France.

I offered to sell a Marshal from my collection and to have it delivered to him, naturally completely legal. Forums said, it was not possible for private persons and, and…
Je lui proposais alors de lui vendre un des Marshal de ma collection et de lui apporter, bien sûr de façon totalement légale. La rumeur des forums disait que pour un particulier ce serait difficile voire impossible.

Well, my motto is:“Trying teaches.” I soon found a suitable candidate and, thanks to modern technology, dispatched photos for technical assessment. From Paris came a joyful „oui.” Then the question arose, ship by mail or hand carry? Le Molvanien thought my bringing the pistol would be super, then we could meet face to face. Said and done! So I booked a ticket with Air France and planned to make the trip with the revolver in my bag – packed very, very carefully.
Ma devise étant « Il faut essayer pour apprendre », je trouvais rapidement un Marshal convenable, et grâce à la technologie moderne, lui faisait parvenir des photos pour son aval. La réponse parisienne fur un joyeux « oui ». Puis la question de l’envoi arriva… par courrier ou livraison en mains propres ? Le Molvanien pensa que si je venais le lui apporter ce serait super, nous pourrions alors nous rencontrer en chair et en os. Aussitôt dit, aussitôt fait, je trouvais un vol sur Air France et me préparais à mon voyage avec le revolver dans mon sac, emballé très précautionneusement.

First, I got written confirmation from Air France stating that I could bring the revolver aboard the aircraft. Then I got an export certificate from German authorities. Finally, for my own peace of mind, I got confirmation from the French Embassy stating I would be allowed to enter France with the Marshal.
Tout d’abord, j’obtenais la confirmation d’Air France que je pouvais bien apporter ce revolver à bord. Puis je faisais le nécessaire pour le certificat d’export auprès des autorités allemandes. En fin, pour ma propre tranquillité d’esprit, j’obtenais la confirmation de l’ambassade de France que j’avais bien l’autorisation de rentrer sur le territoire français avec le Marshal.

I had no interest in spending the next 20 years in the Foreign Legion, perhaps even in chains.
Je n’étais pas du tout tenté par l’idée de passer les 20 prochaines années à la Légion Etrangère, voire enchainé.

With the necessary documents in hand, I set out to visit our French outpost. Arriving at the departure airport, I headed straight for the Air France counter to check in. I was already registered in the airline computer to transport a gun.  Seeing this note, the clerk asked me to wait briefly for the Federal Police to arrive, for only they can give the final “ja” for the trip. Up to now, I had held my suitcase and revolver case separate in my hands. A waiting line had already formed behind me, but when the policeman arrived, no one made a further peep.  The official asked me politely for my authorization and asked me to remove the pistol from the case, so he could compare its serial number with the number shown on the document.
Avec tous les documents nécessaires, je partais pour ma visite vers notre avant-poste français. A l’arrivée à l’aéroport, je me dirigeais directement vers le comptoir Air France pour le check in. J’avais déjà enregistré informatiquement le transport d’une arme. A la vue de mon dossier, l’employé me demanda d’attendre l’arrivée d’un policier fédéral afin qu’il donne le « Ja » final pour l’embarquement. Jusqu’à ce moment, je portais d’une main ma valise et de l’autre la mallette de l’arme. Derrière moi se formait déjà une queue, mais lorsque le policier arriva, plus personne ne dit rien. Il me demanda poliment mon autorisation de transport/export et me demanda de sortir l’arme de sa mallette afin qu’il vérifie que les numéros de série correspondent bien.

Confused, I asked „Here?” An equally abrupt “Ja!” followed.  Sight of the Marshal in hand made other passengers aware, not to gripe or suchlike. Soon the third counter opened so the other travelers could be processed for boarding.
Un peu interloqué je lui demandais « Ici ? ». Il répondit un peu sèchement « Ja ». La vue du Marshal dans ma main fit taire toute plainte des autres passagers, surtout qu’un autre guichet venait d’ouvrir pour leur embarquement.

Scarcely two minutes later, I stowed the revolver case in my bag, closed the locks to secure the good piece, and then had everything together entered as checked baggage. The entire process went quickly, and the absence of ammunition sped it up. My bag got a red label on the handle, a sign for “Gun” inside.  Then my bag disappeared into machine’s stomach, and I took a seat in the passenger lounge.
A peine deux minutes plus tard, je remettais le revolver dans sa mallette, fermais le cadenas puis mettais le tout dans ma valise direction la soute. Tout se passa très vite, et l’absence de munitions facilita l’enregistrement. Ma valise fut gratifiée d’une étiquette rouge indiquant la présence d’une arme à l’intérieur et disparu dans les entrailles de la machine. J’allais ensuite m’asseoir dans la salle d’embarquement.

Once landed in Paris, I retrieved my bag without further ado.  Le Molvanien was waiting for me in the public area. We went directly to his house, where we began our first personal acquaintance and shoptalk.  On the same wave length – splendid!
Une fois arrivé, je récupérais ma valise sans souci. Le Molvanien m’attendait. Nous partîmes directement vers sa maison pour faire connaissance et bavarder. Nous étions sur la même longueur d’onde, splendide !

In the evening, we enjoyed the French hospitality of wine and cheese. In this totally pleasant ambience, we could also conduct the ceremony for the transfer of the FROCS certificate. Then, with much joy, I presented my host with a special wine package created for me just for the occasion by the media company Harmuth Werbetechnik in Nordenham
Dans la soirée, j’appréciais l’hospitalité française avec du vin et du fromage. Dans cette ambiance très agréable, nous avons procédé à la cérémonie de la remise du certificat de FROCS, puis, avec grand plaisir, j’ai remis à mon hôte un emballage spécial de bouteille de vin créé pour célébrer cette occasion par la société HW de Nordenham

The following day, we set out to see Paris. Like the other 2.2 million residents there, we used the Metro. Sights such as the oldest bridge in Paris, or the Moulin Rouge were taken for granted. But no travel guide in the world shows the location of what is probably the oldest, smallest, and best bistro. Indescribable!  Only with a FROCS who knows his way around can one experience such ambience. Only a true friend can convey how the Eifel Tower -- when one sees it for the first time -- reveals its true beauty only at night. I had a great trip, with a great host, and with many good memories.
Le jour suivant nous partîmes pour découvrir Paris. Comme les 2,2 millions d’habitants intra-muros nous prîmes le métro. Evidemment, le Pont Neuf, plus vieux pont de Paris, le Moulin Rouge étaient entre autres au programme, mais aucun guide touristique ne vous indique où trouver un des plus vieux, authentique et plus petit bistro parisien. Indescriptible ! Seul un FROCS qui connait sa ville peut vous faire découvrir une telle ambiance. Seul un véritable ami sait comment et quand transmettre la véritable beauté de la Tour Eiffel lorsqu’on la voit pour la première fois : la nuit !l Ce fût un beau séjour avec un hôte parfait, et j’ai rapporté plein de bons souvenirs.

We’ll see, where my next trip takes me. In any case, I look forward to “Le Molvanien’s” making a visit to my home.
Nous verrons où mon prochain voyage n’entrainera. Dans tous les cas, j’ai hâte de faire découvrir au Molvanien mon pays aussi.
